Frequently Asked Questions
Are your meals dairy-free?
Yes - all of our meals are entirely dairy free! This includes all of our dressings, sauces, smoothies, etc.
Are your meals gluten-free?
Yes! All of our meals are 100% gluten-free.
We operate in a commercial kitchen where gluten is present for personal use; however, we take great care to ensure that our gluten-free ingredients and utensils are not contaminated.
What is the nutrition content in your meals?
Our Nutrition Philosophy
1. Whole-Foods First
Why it matters: Whole foods provide vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytonutrients in the forms your body absorbs best. We prioritize nutrient-dense ingredients that support long-term health.
How we do it: We cook from scratch with real ingredients, fresh herbs, whole vegetables, and minimally processed proteins. Our meals are delivered fresh - never frozen - so nutrients and flavor stay intact.
2. High-Quality Protein in Every Meal
Why it matters:
Protein is essential for energy, muscle repair, hormone production, immune health, and satiety. When you’re busy, getting enough protein can make the biggest difference in how you feel and function throughout the day.
How we do it: Westerly meals are intentionally designed with generous, balanced protein portions that support real-life energy needs - with protein ranges of 18-45g per Wellness meal and 18-22g per Plant-Based meal. Our protein ranges are based on thousands of meals crafted in our kitchens each year, ensuring every plate is both satisfying and deeply nourishing. We use ingredients chosen for digestibility, quality, and flavor because protein should taste good, not just hit a number.
3. Allergen-Friendly: Always Gluten- & Dairy-Free
Why it matters: Eliminating gluten and dairy from our meals lowers inflammation and makes nourishing food truly accessible. We want our meals to be a long-term nutrition option, so accommodating common allergens provides more access for everyone.
How we do it: Our kitchens operate gluten- and dairy-free. We offer additional accommodations for sensitivities and transparently list ingredients so customers always know what’s inside. We can work around the following allergens: nuts, soy, sesame, coconut, corn, eggs, beef, lamb, pork, shrimp (the only shellfish we use), fish and provide fully vegan options.
4. Eat the Rainbow
Why it matters: Diverse plants feed a diverse microbiome, improve digestion, boost immunity, and supply a wide spectrum of micronutrients.
How we do it: Weekly menus rotate colorful vegetables and plant-forward dishes so customers get broad, natural nutrient variety without having to think about it. Our weekly menus provide more than 50 unique fruits and vegetables so you can truly eat the rainbow.
5. Smart, Healthy Fats
Why it matters:
Healthy fats keep you full, energized, support brain and hormone health, and help reduce inflammation.
How we do it: We cook with nourishing, unsaturated fats - like olive oil, nuts, seeds, and other plant oils - while avoiding artificial trans fats and saturated fats. Our menu limits red meat to just 1-2 times per week, and you can easily skip it with our Red Meat restriction or by choosing a Build Your Own Meal Plan.
6. Low-Sodium, Low-Additive Cooking
Why it matters: Reducing sodium and preservatives supports cardiovascular health and keeps meals naturally clean.
How we do it: We season primarily with fresh herbs, citrus, vinegars, spices, and slow-simmered flavor to keep sodium levels low - and never add preservatives to any meals. Our meals average under 500g of sodium, which falls under the “low sodium” category for packaged meals.
7. Gut Health First
Why it matters: A healthy gut supports immunity, mood, digestion, and nutrient absorption.
How we do it: Our meals naturally include fiber-rich veggies, sulfurous plants, and diverse whole-food starches that nourish the microbiome. We avoid artificial sweeteners and no added preservatives that disrupt gut balance.
8. Food That Fits Real Life
Why it matters:
Real results don’t come from extremes - they come from consistency. We believe that nutrition only works when it fits into your actual life.
How we do it: We don’t chase food trends or fad diets. Our meals are built on real, science-backed nutrition that supports long-term health. Every order arrives ready-to-eat, making it easy to stay consistent even on busy days. We also use reusable coolers and ice packs to reduce waste and support a more sustainable food system.
Do you use any preservatives in your meals?
Our meals are free from any additional artificial preservatives and we deliver twice a week to ensure freshness. Some of our dishes contain citric acid (Vitamin C) and dried fruits that may contain sulfur dioxide, which acts as a natural preservative for dried goods. You can find the full list of ingredients here for your reference.
Where do I find the current menu and ingredients for each meal?
Do you work around allergies and dietary restrictions? How do I add them to my order?
We do our best to work around the major allergies and dietary restrictions in our Set Chef Meal Plan. Please note: Allergens are not accommodated in our Build Your Own Meal Plan since you are able to choose your own meals. All of our meals are entirely gluten-free & dairy-free. The following are the only additional allergens & dietary restrictions that we can work around:
nuts
soy
sesame
coconut
corn
eggs
beef
lamb
pork
shrimp (the only shellfish we use)
fish
vegan
Please note that we cannot accommodate additional requests.
After you add a plan to your cart you can add these allergens to each plan in the checkout box, you can choose as many as needed.
ALLERGEN NOTICE: Our meal plans are always gluten & dairy free but we do want you to know that we work in a private commercial kitchen space where tree nuts, peanuts, shellfish, fish, sesame, soybeans, eggs, coconut, some gluten and dairy are present.
**If you have a severe allergy, we don't recommend the program.**
I added restrictions to my order but it isn't showing in my order confirmation email.
Unfortunately restriction notes don't populate in the order confirmation email but if you added them from the drop down to your order we got them!
If you created a subscription you will be able to view and update them in your customer portal. To do so:
- Sign into your account.
- Click "Manage Subscription".
- Click on the red "Manage Subscriptions" button underneath whichever plan you would like to change or swap.
You will be able to view or update your allergens here, make sure to save any changes!
If you aren't seeing the "Allergies" section it might have to do with your browser or cookies settings. Try using a different browser, Safari or Chrome typically work best!
If you placed a one time order you unfortunately do not have the option to view an account but please feel free to reach out to us at hello@westerlykitchen.com with any questions or concerns, we are happy to help!
What does the restriction sticker on my meal mean?
If you have dietary restrictions or allergens from our accepted list our team will remove or substitute your meal to accommodate this. The sticker will list all the ingredients from that meal that were removed. For example M-D: pork, soy (pork and soy were removed). The sticker also lists all of your restrictions below so our team knows what can or can not be substituted in place of another restriction. For example RESTRICTIONS: pork, soy, corn, coconut.
We take our customers restrictions very seriously, and because our restriction meals are such an intensive and important process, we are only able to accommodate our specific list of exceptions outlined on our restriction page. Unfortunately, we cannot make any other substitutions or changes beyond this list.
Is this a good program for diabetes management?
Both our Wellness and Plant-Based plans can be good solutions for diabetes management. We avoid refined sugars as much as possible and focus on a balanced menu full of fruits and vegetables with gluten free starches and a good portion of protein. We are also able to remove any of these ingredients. We do have many clients with diabetes who enjoy Westerly, but we always recommend consulting with your doctor about the menu to make sure it’s a good fit for you personally.
Is your Plant-Based menu fully vegan?
Our Plant-based Menu contains eggs in some Breakfast options. Our Plant-based Lunch and Plant-based Dinner options are fully vegan. If you are ordering a Plant-based Meal Plan that includes Breakfast and would like a fully vegan menu, please select "Vegan" from the allergens drop-down during checkout. Learn more here.
Are your meals designed for weight loss?
The primary purpose of our meals is to help you feel your best. We find that feeling your best often leads to looking your best too. We don’t describe our program as a diet plan, but many of our clients find that by sticking to Westerly meal delivery for all of their meals, they will naturally ditch unwanted pounds.
What are the heating/cooking instructions?
Your meals arrive ready to enjoy! You can place the bottom portion of your meal container directly into your microwave or oven. While all microwaves and ovens differ we typically recommend these times:
For Breakfasts: 60-90 seconds in the microwave or 5-10 minutes at 350 degrees in the oven.
For Soups: 30 seconds, stir, 30 seconds for a total of one minute in the microwave or until hot on a stovetop.
For Dinners: 2-3 minutes in the microwave or 10-15 minutes at 350 degrees in the oven.
*In the oven, to retain moisture in your dinners, we recommend adding a little water and covering with foil.
From Frozen: While you can freeze your dinners we do not recommend freezing breakfasts or lunches.
If you have time to thaw them during the day, you can drain out any excess water from the veggies and then heat. Straight from frozen will still work in a pinch. If they are thawed, follow the normal heating instructions. If they are still frozen:
Microwave: 4-5 minutes to start, stir, heat for 1 more minute, check, continue to add a minute until it is heated through.
Oven: 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees to start, stir, heat for 5 more minutes, check, continue to add 5 minutes until it is heated through.
**We do provide cold breakfasts in entirely clear compostable containers, these should be enjoyed cold and can not be microwaved!**
How long do your meals stay fresh? Can I freeze them?
Our meals are made from scratch in our kitchen and we don't add additional preservatives during preparation. We recommend eating them the day they were designed for but will typically stay fresh and extra day or two. Dinners can be frozen but we do not recommend freezing breakfasts or lunches. To store in the freezer you can either replace the lid with foil or transfer all the contents to a freezer safe container.
To reheat your dinners from frozen:
If you have time to thaw them during the day, you can drain out any excess water from the veggies and then heat. Straight from frozen will still work in a pinch. If they are thawed, use the normal heating instructions.

Each meal is complete and balanced so you don’t need to add any other ingredients.

Do you use organic ingredients?
We use organic ingredients when possible, but not exclusively. We partner with local suppliers who prioritize freshness and quality while sourcing locally whenever they can.
Since our menu is brand new each week, the exact amount of organic content varies week to week based on the menu and availability. Essentially, we prioritize using local ingredients, then organic as possible!

Will you consider switching to fully organic?
We are constantly assessing interest and will definitely explore adding that option in the future. Please email us your interest at hello@westerlykitchen.com. If that does ever become an option we will absolutely let you know!
Why do I have a completely different meal then the menu when I am only allergic to one type of nut?
With all of our various nuts allergies, our system flags all nuts allergies. This is why special meals are delivered. When nuts are utilized in the main portion of the meal, a replacement meal will be made as a safety precaution for any nuts cross-contamination. This is precautionary as sometimes the specific nut is swapped out during meal plating due to sourcing, etc & we always want to err on the side of caution with all allergies and specifically nut allergies. When nuts are only a topping (like on a salad or as a garnish on a dinner) the team will be able to just hold nuts and replace with something else.
